Welcome to Year 5, where the Palmers Cross Learning Journey continues. We have an action-packed year planned, including a trip to Birmingham Art Gallery to take part in a Greek Art Masterclass.

Children In Need

During Black History month Class 5 researched the life of Rosa Parks. We created fact files about her life.

During class week beginning 6th November we put our pens and pencils down to observe a two munities silence on Friday 10th November.

We also watched The Big First Aid Lessons where we learnt about how to deal with burns and choking!

Class 5 represented Palmers Cross during Young Ambassadors training at Aldersley Leisure Centre.  They took part three workshops to help the develop their leadership, ambassadorial and communications skills.

As mathematicians in Year 5, the children will be focusing on mental maths in our oral mental starters, learning times tables and number bonds. We will also be learning about properties of shapes, measurement and statistics. This year percentages will also be on the maths menu alongside funky fractions and delicious decimals. Children will also consolidate their understanding of written calculations. Don’t forget to check out our calculation policy on the school website. Throughout, we will practise applying our knowledge to test style questions – in preparation for Year 6!

Here we are solving tricky subtraction and addition mentally!

The children will be learning how to develop their use of punctuation (e.g. using commas, brackets and colons). We will cover film narrative, poetry and persuasive letters and texts. The children will have spellings to learn on a weekly basis from both myself and phonics teacher. Children are also encouraged to read regularly and to enjoy it. And not forgetting we will need our legendarily reading journals completed each time a book is finished.

As scientists, this term we will learning about states of matter. We will be looking at everyday objects and looking at their properties as well as dissolving and recovering a range of substances. We will also be looking at reversible and irreversible changes.

Here we are melting butter and mixing vinegar with bicarbonate of soda to see what changes happen.

We have been also been looking at the different parts of a flower. We have labelled them in our books and then dissected a lily to embed our learning.

Please ensure that children have the correct PE kit in school at all times. Should you wish, PE kit can be purchased from the school office. In the interests of safety, no jewellery, including earrings, should be worn on PE days.

Children in Year 5 receive regular homework. Spellings will be given out on Friday and tested on the following Thursday. Children are still expected to complete a reading journal activity of their choice after every book. Children should aim to complete at least one reading journal activity per week (examples of reading journals activities will be stuck inside their Reading Journal Book). Additional creative homework (purple book) will also be given out throughout the year.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, I will usually be available at the end of each day. Thank you for your continued support.
