Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday and that you are feeling refreshed and ready for a year full of fun and learning! The children have a very busy year ahead with SATs, residential, transition days and much more! In Maths, we will start the term by focusing on the important topic of place value, which includes areas such as rounding numbers, before moving onto the arithmetic topics as we head towards Christmas.

In English, there will be a great emphasis this term on getting the children to start their sentences in various ways. We have some lovely texts in Year 6 to help us accomplish this, beginning with Letters to the Lighthouse and Holes. We focus a lot on the teaching of Reading in Year 6, so that the children’s reading is as good as it can be before Secondary School. The children will be read to individually and will also have Whole Class Reading sessions once a week.

In year 6, we will expect children to be reading regularly at home and completing journal activities to a high standard after each book. In our topic lessons, we will begin with the theme ‘A World of Bright Ideas’ a unit which focuses on the creative process of invention and design, with a main focus on history and design technology. Pupils will look at patenting and copyright through the creation of pizza companies, before moving on to learning about historical inventions of the past and how they have developed over time.

Our PE sessions will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Please ensure that children always have the correct PE kit (consisting of a light blue top, navy shorts and pumps) in school at all times. In the interests of safety, no jewellery, including earrings, should be worn on PE days. We will also be having swimming sessions this term on Friday afternoons so please ensure children bring their swimming kit as they did in year 5, including a swimming hat.

Our residential has already been booked to Laches Wood. We are so excited to create lasting memories for the children through this visit and more details will follow about this in the next couple of weeks.

We look forward to working with you over the next year to ensure your children have a pleasurable and valuable last year. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We will be available at the end of most days on the playground.

Thank you for your continued support. Mrs A Gormley (Class Teacher) Mrs L Guest (Support staff)
